Carl R. Carlson, 91, of Mendon and formerly of Hopedale passed away Thursday August 3, 2017 in Lydia Taft House, Uxbridge. He leaves behind the love of his life, June S. (Larson) Carlson married to each other for an extraordinary 66 years. Carl was a trained toolmaker having completed the Draper apprentice program and worked at the former Draper Corporation in Hopedale for over 36 years. He and his family lived at One Bancroft Park for more than 30 years. His daily routine was to run out the door when the bell began to ring and complete the two minute dash before the whistle blew, often returning home for lunch, which he no doubt ate standing up, before returning to finish his day. He was born in 1926 in Milford the son of the late Carl Charlie and Anna (Nelson) Carlson. Carl left high school in his junior year to enlist in the U.S. Navy. He served on the USS Canberra in the South Pacific and was on board when the Cruiser was torpedoed and disabled in the Straits of Formosa in 1944 close to the enemy and far from safe harbor. He returned from his service in WWIIto complete his high school education and graduated from Hopedale High School. Carl enjoyed many family camping trips, the highlight being a three-week trip to Yellowstone Park. June and Carl were members of the Valley Stompers where the dancing and friendships were anything but square. He and his wife travelled extensively after his retirement, including trips to Hawaii, Alaska, Italy, and Scandinavia. He was a longtime member of the Community Covenant Church in Hopkinton. His rich baritone voice could be heard on any given Sunday at the Swedish Church on Grant Street and later in Hopkinton and at the Unitarian Parish in Hopedale. He was a member of the Montgomery Lodge of Masons A.F. & A.M. in Milford.
In addition to his soul mate June, he is survived by two sons Eric C. and his wife Charlene Carlson of Millville, and Kurt W. Carlson of Greenville, WI; a daughter Kristin C. Wood of Millville and her late husband Steve Wood; four grandchildren Charlie and Anders Carlson, and Leanna and Katherine Wood; a sister Lillian Medeiros of Harwinton, CT; a sister-in-law Joyce Daubar and her husband Justin of East Lyme, CT; a brother-in-law Warren Larson of Lanesboro, MA, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
