By MyFM's Jake Archer - Tonight in Boston, the Celtics and the Washington Wizards will face off in a Game 7 with the right to head to the Eastern Conference Finals on the line. We’re here in this situation because of a blown opportunity by Boston and an amazing shot by John Wall.
On Friday night in Game 6, the two teams had a rock-throwing contest for most of the game as neither of them could get going on offense. It was 69-66 Celtics heading into the fourth before the game got very good and it turned into the type of tense back and forth atmosphere you want to see. In the fourth quarter, there were six ties and nine lead changes to keep the fans on the edge of their seats.
Isaiah Thomas took over for Boston in the fourth quarter, as he often does, and the Celtics opened up an 87-82 lead late. The game should have been wrapped up and the series should have been over, but the next thirty seconds or so were sloppy and Washington stormed back to tie it.
With 7.7 seconds left in the game, Celtics big man Al Horford kissed a jump shot off the glass to put his team up again. All the Celtics, who showed up to the arena wearing all black for a Wizards “funeral”, had to do was step on the neck. On the ensuing possession however, Washington ran an inbound play for Bradley Beal that actually went to John Wall. Wall chucked up a three pointer with Avery Bradley contesting the shot and it fell to put the Wizards up one.
All the Celtics could do now was have Isaiah Thomas throw up a desperation three himself that came close, but didn’t go. The NBA would later say that the officials messed up how much time the Celtics should have had on the clock but Boston can’t really be complaining. They shot themselves in the foot and then got beat on a great shot by a great player. There really wasn’t anything you could do about the Wall shot and you let him take that almost every time. You just have to tip your hat and move on.
After the game, John Wall was fired up and blasted the Celtics for showing up in all black and not backing it up. The Wizards had done the same thing for a regular season contest with the C’s this year but they had actually won the game so it didn’t end up looking bad. The Celtics denied that they all wore black on purpose, but to their credit, they seemed to move on from the loss rather quickly and are now focused on Game 7.
So tonight, we’ll see what these two teams are made of. The home team has won every game between these two this year, but Game 7 is usually a different animal. This is the series I predicted it would be, but I said that the Wizards would take it in 7. I’ve got to stick with that pick which disappoints me because I believe the C’s have played well. I just think that tonight, it’s going to be a real dogfight between two teams that are determined to get to their goal and things will fall Washington’s way.
Tip off is 8 p.m. so make sure you tune in for what should be an electric basketball game.
