Ice Skating... A Forgotten Activity?

By WMRC’s Ray Auger - Is ice skating an activity of the past?  Have we evolved (or devolved depending on your age) beyond the simple practice of circling a body of frozen water for hours on end?  I sure hope not.

Growing up on a lake myself, we couldn’t wait for that first freeze so we could strap on those metal blades and spend a whole weekend zipping around a makeshift rink of cleared snow and solid ice.  A pickup game of hockey was always developing with the varying rules depending on the level of players that gathered at your “spot” for a game or two.  Sometimes the day called for some simple skating from point A to Point B and back… again and again.

Has technology and youthful angst sullied this simple childhood act of unrealized exercise and intake of much needed fresh air?  When was the last time you skated or took your kids skating?  It may be worth reexploring this winter.  Ice skating can be as simple as quality time spent with the family or with a loved one.  Tuning out the aforementioned distractions of technology and taking a step back to a simpler time.  It can also be the first step towards a Stanley Cup win or an Olympic gold medal.   And let’s not forget… this is an activity that, for the most part, is FREE.

No matter the reason, find the time.  The local area is home to many suitable lakes and ponds.  If you are not a fan of the winter temperatures, there are many indoor rinks that hold designated hours for “free skates” like Pirelli Veterans Arena in Franklin or Blackstone Valley IcePlex in Hopedale.

Why wait for the natural conditions to freeze your local outdoor rink or pond?  The Blackstone Valley Boys and Girls Club in Blackstone offers free skating ($5 for non members) on their outdoor synthetic ice rink Mondays through Saturdays throughout the winter.  Visit their website at www.bvbgc.com for more information.

Now get out there and skate.  Start a new family tradition today!  Or get working on that gold medal!
