Mary Elizabeth (Sutcliffe) Ames, 96, of Mendon passed away Wed. Jan. 31, 2018 at Lydia Taft House in Uxbridge. She was the wife of the late Albert Lee Ames who died in 1951.
Mrs. Ames was the 1st Women Police Officer in Mendon for 26 years, serving as a reserve officer who gave many hours to the Town of Mendon for no pay. She was awarded a Mendon Police Gold Badge at the age of 65. She also worked as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for 15 years before retiring in 1983. In her retirement, she had been a driver for Tripp, Inc. in Upton.
Mrs. Ames was born June 17, 1921 in Providence, RI. She was the daughter of the late Alfred and Mary M. (Murray) Sutcliffe. She graduated from Northbridge High School in 1939. She went on to become a Pioneer of the David Hale Fanning School of Practical Nursing in Worcester. She was enrolled as the school’s first student in 1954.
Mrs. Ames was a den mother to the Mendon Cub Scouts. She was twice voted Senior Citizen of the Year in Mendon, where she drove the Senior Citizen Bus. Mrs. Ames was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for fifty years and was a mother advisor to the Rainbow Girls. Mary was also a longtime volunteer at the Mendon Voting Polls.
Mrs. Ames is survived by a son, Albert Lee Ames and his wife Maureen of Mendon; one sister, June R. Jansen of Naples, FL; three grandchildren, Christopher Lee Ames of Upton, Tara Jean Ames of CA, and Heather Elizabeth Murray and her fiancée Joe Conti of Blackstone; great-grandchildren, Kassidy Murray of Blackstone and Camden Davison of CA and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Olive S. Moroney.
Visiting hours will be held on Fri. Feb. 16, 2018 from 9:30 - 10:30 AM in the BUMA FUNERAL HOME, 480 Church St., Whitinsville followed by a graveside service at 11 AM in Pine Grove Cemetery, Linwood Ave., Whitinsville.
