An Upton resident, Michelle Goodwin, is asking the regional school committee to explore the feasibility of expanding the two town district to include Uxbridge, Hopedale and Northbridge in the wake of massive budget increases being requested for next year. Goodwin said the district cannot justify increasing staff nor programming expenses when enrollment is decreasing. Goodwin said by expanding the district with larger enrollments the schools will be able to provide the greatest diversity of options at greater efficiency. Goodwin told the committee with the five town plan she envisions two high schools and three middle schools and elementary schools near children's homes. She said this is the future of the district if they want to provide the greatest programming in the most efficient manner and Goodwin said it's unwise and unreasonable to continue to provide a private school program to a small number of students at a high price. She asked the school committee to take the lead and invite other communities to a meeting between equals to build this regional opportunity for generations to come.
