Arthur B. Baxter, 70, of Mendon

Arthur B. Baxter, 70, of Mendon passed away on Monday, July 8, 2019 at the Milford Regional Medical Center, Milford. He was survived by his wife of 42 years, Eileen M. Dunne and his daughter, Elizabeth Dunne Baxter.

Arthur was born April 11, 1949 in Portland, ME the son of the late Arthur B. and Patricia (Dennen) Baxter and had been a resident of Mendon for the past 33 years. He was a graduate of Simsbury High School in Connecticut and earned a Master of Arts in English Literature from Temple University in Philadelphia.

Art’s tenure as the editor of The Hartford University Journal earned him a full undergraduate scholarship and cemented his life-long love of literature. It was not unusual for Art and his family to be found with their noses buried in their respective books and he was on a first name basis with the local librarians. His friends benefitted from another favorite past time - he was an avid angler who also cleaned and cooked his catch. His love for the outdoors showed in his pleasure in both snow and water skiing, where he spent many happy hours with friends and family. And the grade school teacher who chastised him for reading about classic cars instead of doing math might have been interested to know that he eventually drove a classic ragtop Camaro and grew up to become a Finance Manager.

An already keen appreciation for travel only grew after a Kerouac inspired road trip across the United States as a young hippie. Included among his favorite trips were those with his extended family to Maine, Spain and the Baltics, with friends to the Cape, France and along the Danube, as well as many other countries with his wife.

He was predeceased by his brother, Peter C. Baxter. He will be remembered fondly by his brothers and sisters in law, Kathleen and Vincent, Roberta and Robert, and Christine and Timothy. His nieces and nephews – Robert, Jeffrey, Amanda, Alexandra, Colin, Emily and Joseph will also miss him.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The American Heart Association, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241-7005.
