The Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra is preparing to launch its Seventeenth consecutive season of world-class symphony concerts in The Grand Ballroom at Milford Town Hall in November, and also the Fifth Season of the Claflin Hill Alternatives Chamber Music Series at the Singh Performance Center in the Alternatives Whitin Mill in Northbridge this fall.
Coming off of the euphoria of its Sweet Sixteen Season last year, which saw a thirty percent increase in concert attendance and many first time audience members, the CHSO staff, volunteers and musicians have been in a steady stream of frenzied activity throughout the summer months as they prepare for the upcoming year of concerts.
The CHSO Symphony Series begins on Saturday evening, November 5, 2016 with “In the Shadow of Ludwig Van” – a program featuring music of Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn and Johannes Brahms – two great composers whose life work was influenced by the memory of the great Beethoven.
“This season, we are exploring some of the great “symphonies” of the orchestral literature,” said Paul Surapine, Founding Executive & Artistic Director of the CHSO. “The orchestral symphony as a form of musical composition is one of the ultimate creations that a composer can create using the vast color and dynamic palate of a full orchestra of instruments. Beethoven was one of the “mold breakers” of what a symphony form could or should be, and after him, composers in the following 100 years took full liberty in exploring the possibilities that opened up to them after Beethoven. Each concert will present a major symphony, paired in the traditional Claflin Hill “fusion cusine” style of programming with other musical offerings that make a fitting accompaniment and may be more familiar to the listener. It’s going to be an exciting season and we’re all “champing at the bit” in anticipation of getting it underway!”
Other highlights of the CHSO 2016-17 season include the annual Holiday Pops concert on December 10th; an exciting and colorful program, “Fire and Icet” on February 4, 2017; “Seascapes” on March 4, 2017; the annual Family Symphony Matinee on Sunday, March 26th at 3 PM and the Season Finale, “Road Trip!” on April 29, 2017.
All concerts take place at the Milford Town Hall, 52 Main Street, Route 16 in Downtown Milford. All Saturday evening concerts begin at 7:30 PM and the Sunday matinee in March begins at 3 PM.
The Fifth Season of the Claflin Hill Alternatives Chamber Music Series at the Singh Performance Center in the Alternatives Whitin Mill in Northbridge opens on Friday evening, October 21, 2016 and features “Brass Venture” – an energetic, entertaining and virtuosic group of brass Principals from the CHSO in a program entitled “The Power of People and Places.” It will feature a special performance of “Acadia” by Eric Ewazen – which was premiered by Brass Venture this past summer in Maine.
The Season continues in January with “Rivendell” featuring the New England String Quartet, and concludes in April with “Paul Surapine – Family & Friends.”
