In the largest technology buyout ever, Dell Computer has agreed to buy EMC in Hopkinton for $67 billion. EMC has long been a strong force in Hopkinton and one of the state's largest companies employing 9,500 people. The impact locally won't be known for quite some time. Dell CEO Michael Dell said yesterday that EMC will grow and great things will happen in the area because of the acquisition, although he did not rule out job cuts. The deal should be finalized between the two companies in about six months. Vendors that depend on EMC for their livelihood are worried while EMC CEO Joe Tucci stands to receive $39 million in total payouts as part of the deal as well as $8.7 million in cash and severance and $30.3 million in equity awards. The deal between the two firms has been about a year in the making.
