Franklin Police Jail Diversion

By MyFM's Rick Michaels - The Franklin and Medway Police Departments have been awarded a joint grant from the state enabling the towns to hire a clinical social worker to assist with cases of people in a mental health crisis. The jail diversion program, aims to help people in mental health crisis, get they assistance they need and not direct them unnecessarily into the criminal justice system. Franklin Police Chief Thomas Lynch says this is a program that has been successful in several surrounding communities helping officers with mental health crisis calls and leading to better results for all involved.  Medway Police Chief Allen Tingley says these calls can be stressful and sometimes violent any tool is welcome that can help resolve these calls without force and reduce the number of repeat calls for service. Franklin and Medway Police will work with social workers from the Framingham company, Advocates Inc. and the initial grant is for 300-thousand dollars and is good for three-years.
