Henry A. “Chick” DeMichele, 89

Henry A. “Chick” DeMichele, who retired after 32 years of service on the Newton Fire Dept. passed away on Aug 11, 2019. He was 89.

Chick was a lifelong Newton resident graduated from Newton High in 1949. He served in the US Army during the Korean war and was a Past Commander and Life member of VFW Post 1538. Chick played semi pro baseball and later became an umpire, umpiring twilight and Babe Ruth league games for over 50 years. He served as president of the Newton South Little League and for more than 40 years, was the umpire at the opening day ceremonies. Chick was a longtime member of Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Parish and had served as an usher for many years.  For over 40 years, Chick, an avid fisherman, and 6 other Newton firefighters, traveled to Rangely, ME for an annual fishing trip.

He was the beloved husband for 66 years of Dorothy (Coffey) DeMichele, the loving father of Richard and his wife Kathleen of Franklin, Deborah Giorgio and her husband Lawrence of Needham and Edward DeMichele of Newton Upper Falls. Dear “Papa” to his grandchildren Michael, Christopher, Nicholas, Karina, Daniel and Kristina and his great grandchildren Evie and Everley. Brother of Anna Klocker of Framingham and the late Richard DeMichele.

His funeral will be from the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave Needham on Wed Aug 14 at 9:30 AM followed by his Mass of Christian Burial in Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Church, Newton Upper Falls at 10:30 AM. Interment with US Army Military Honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours are Tues 4-7 PM.
