On Tuesday, March 17, the Holliston Fire Department responded to a 12:45 PM report of a fire in an industrial building on Cross Street. Upon arrival, crews observed piles of e-waste on fire in a large warehouse operated by Electronic Recyclers, International. Workers from the business had attempted to extinguish the fire using portable fire extinguishers; one worker was transported to Milford Regional Medical Center for evaluation due to smoke inhalation. Crews conducted aggressive suppression and ventilation operations. Due to deteriorating conditions inside the building, over the course of nearly twelve hours, the incident was escalated to a three-alarm fire; bringing fire crews from Medway, Sherborn, Ashland, Hopkinton, Millis, and Milford Fire Departments; and specialized resources from Sutton Fire, the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, Marlborough Fire, Eversource Energy, M.E. Dellicker Construction, Special Signal Fire Association, ACV Enviro, and Dellicker Excavating. Station coverage was provided by the Southborough Fire Department. The incident was declared under control at 10:27 PM, and the last of the personnel cleared the scene at 12:30 AM on Wednesday.
The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are incomplete. The Building Inspector and Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection were notified.
