Hopedale selectperson and town clerk, Janet Jacaruso, is out on medical leave for the next several months and will relinquish both positions during that time. She met with coordinator Steve Sette last week to inform him and her colleagues on the board will address the issue Monday night and reorganize according. Sette said at this point there is no need to do anything regarding the board as they maintain a quorum. the issue could be though that if there is a tie vote on an issue there is not the third member to break it, although this rarely happens. Regarding the town clerk position, Sette said that he will reach out to retired clerks to see if someone can be hired on an interim basis for two days a week and the assistant clerk, Mary Draper, who was hired recently, will work the other days. She held the position for several years in the past and is familiar with the job's responsibilities. Sette said he has identified some line items where funds can be transferred to pay for the interim person. Others in town hall, including Sette, his assistant Susan Brower, and Pat Sampson, will fill in where necessary. This is defiantly a major issue that must be dealt with so that both important positions are adequately filled. Bob Burns and Sandra Biaghetti could appoint a resident to serve in Jacaruso's seat if it's determined she will not return before the spring election.
