HOPKINTON - The Hopkinton Fire Department has been awarded nearly $6,000 in grants toward their Student and Seniors Awareness of Fire Education or “SAFE'' Programs. Chief William Miller says they are getting more than $3,700 toward the student programs and more than $2,000 toward the seniors program which will allow firefighters to work directly with groups to teach fire safety and prevention. Officials say since they started SAFE education 27 years ago the rate of annual child fire deaths has decreased by 78%.
