By MyFM's Rick Michaels - The Holliston Police Department has received multiple calls of late, from concerned residents and
passing motorists regarding ice safety, for those they see skating and ice fishing. So, how can you tell if ice is safe? There are no guarantees and no matter how cold it’s been, always consider ice to be potentially dangerous. Holliston Police letting residents know on Facebook, of a State website with ice safety information and tips, including some things to keep in mind before heading out on a frozen pond or lake. New ice is stronger than old ice, ice doesn’t freeze uniformly, you can’t judge ice conditions by appearance or thickness alone. Before heading out onto the ice tell someone of your plans, carry a cell phone and small ice pick, that can help you get back on the ice should you fall in. There are also life jackets you can wear under a coat that will keep you at the surface if you fall in and provides insulation against the effects of the cold water.
