Medway Art Week Schedule of Events
  

Would you like to learn how to make Gelli-plate prints or try drumming? How about making your own ice cream?  Do you know what a Glamelia or Zentangle or Tessellation is? This and much more is happening during art week hosted by the Medway Cultural Council from Friday, April 26th to Saturday, , May 4th.

A statewide celebration, Arts week is filled with fun and interactive activities for the whole family to enjoy. Now celebrated annually each spring, ArtWeek is affordable fun for anyone with a creative sense of adventure. This award-winning festival features unique and unexpected experiences that are participatory, interactive, or offer behind-the-scenes access to artists or the creative process, each ArtWeek event is a one-of-a-kind celebration that people won’t want to miss. 

“We are thrilled that Medway will join other cities and towns in offering fun, arts-related activities for all ages during Art Week. Come and support our local talent and businesses at the Thayer House and Library, by trying something new and show that the arts matter to you.” stated Carla C. Cataldo, Chairwoman of the Medway Cultural Council.

 Since fall 2013, ArtWeek has featured nearly 1000 unique events involving more than 900 partners and the number keeps growing. Events will  take place at the Medway Public Library and Thayer House.

Some of the many local artists participating in art week include: Tim Rice Photography, Medway Dance Authority, Judith Moffatt and Jane Curran. There will also be instrument making for children and live animation by the Kendall family in the Makerspace at the Medway Public Library.

ARTWEEK 2019 SCHEDULE

Friday, April 26that the Thayer House

3:00-4:30pm: Henna by Heather (All henna under $20)

Henna is a natural reddish brown plant dye that is used to create beautiful, temporary body art. It lasts from 1-3 weeks, typically around 7-10 days. Heather is an internationally certified, fully insured henna artist.

3:00-5pm: Mix it up: Mixed Media Workshop with Gelli-plate printing and collage – Julie Dennehy (FREE)

Roll up your sleeves and learn how to create colorful and unique prints with a Gelli-plate and everyday household objects.Prints can be made into notecards, postcards, mail art, frameable gifts, and more, and prints can be used as a base for creative mixed media art that is as imaginative as you are!

4:00-4:45pm: Drumming Circle (FREE) 30 participants max. School age and up

Participants will experience the power and spirit of community that is a DRUM CIRCLE, using a variety of drums plus other hand held percussion instruments. Deb Hoppe and Maryanne Donahue, music teachers retired from the Bellingham Public Schools, will lead you in this experience.

4:30- 6:00pm: Beyond Colored Pencils. Judith Moffatt (FREE)
Community Posters and crayons for the kids. Posters and demonstrations for teens and adults. Discover how Watercolor Pencils, Pastel Pencils and layering colors with blenders enhance a coloring page. 

4:30-6:00pm: The Lipstick Artist – Laura E. Osterweis (FREE)

Painting with Lipstick (Children/Teens/Adults) Create an exciting work of art with lipstick and makeup. Choose from a variety of activities, including: completing a coloring page, painting an original piece or experimenting with printmaking techniques. Fun for all ages. All materials will be supplied but you are also certainly welcome to bring along your old makeup to up-cycle into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. 

3:00-9:00pm: WINGS Project (FREE)

Medway High School art project of Canvas Wings where visitors can write or draw what art means to them.6:30-7:00pm: Medway Dance Authority (FREE)

 

Performance by the Medway Dance Authority

7:00-7:45pm: Aoife Bergeron & Friends - GUITARIST

A coffee house style performance where you can sing along with the performer.

8:00pm: Blooming Artisan – Jennifer Guerin ($2.00 donation recommended)

A Glamelia is a flower that is created be deconstructing real flowers and putting the flower parts back together to create a single large showy bloom. The glamelia flower bouquets were popular in the 1940’s and 50’s. Come see a demonstration by Jennifer Guerin, Blooming Artisan on how to make these showy and make Glamelia for yourself. 

4:00-8:00pm: Pangea Food Truck (Food for purchase)

Pangea Cuisines in Medway promotes Healthy Eating in Medway, with high quality food. We have the Best Chef in Medway, Chef Andrea prides herself on being able to adapt any recipe to your diet and the test is amazing!  Pangea Cuisines specialize in Paleo-friendly foods, along with other specialty diets that are built with nutritious, real food. Chef Andrea Crow makes every dish Pangea serves from fresh whole foods; you won’t find any artificial, manufactured, or altered foods at Pangea.

 

Monday, April 29th at the Medway Public Library

4:00pm: Reading with Orchestra (FREE) Ages 5 and up

Join us in the Story Room for a special book about music followed by a craft that will help you bring the music home. Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker.

Tuesday, April 30that the Medway Public Library

4:00-5:00pm: Music in the Makerspace! (FREE)

2nd Graders and up are invited to join us in the Makerspace to explore SCIENCE in a fun way. We will delve into the world of sound waves and explore how they move, how they are reflected, and how they are absorbed. 

 

Wednesday, May 1st at the Medway Public Library

4:00pm: Reading with Orchestra (FREE) Ages 5 and up

Join us in the Story Room for a special book about music followed by a craft that will help you bring the music home. Tchaikovsky'sSleeping Beauty. Drop in, call the Library to sign up, or register online.

 

Thursday, May 2ndat the Medway Public Library

3:30-5:00pm: Music in the Makerspace! (FREE)

2nd Graders and up are invited to join us in the Makerspace to explore SCIENCE in a fun way. We will use our engineering and design skills to build our very own musical instruments and then play them together in our very own Found Sound Band!

 

Friday, May 3rdat the Thayer House

3:00-5:30pm: Zentangle with Jane Curran ($30 or $35)

Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is a fascinating new art form that is fun and relaxing. It increases focus and creativity. Zentangle provides artistic satisfaction and an increased sense of personal well being. Zentangle is for everyone, no previous art education is necessary. Materials will be provided." Payment includes materials for the class and a take home packet with all you need to continue creating more Zentangles. Space is limited. Payment received by April 25this $30 and may be sent to my home address at 18 Park Road, Franklin, MA. Payment after that date is $35. 

5:30-9:00pm: WINGS Project (FREE)

5:30-6:00pm: Rena & Friends Craft Activity (Donations accepted for NAMI Walk) Ages 4 and up

Stress balls made of corn starch & balloons (kids like to play with) and lanterns made of paper they can decorate, bringing light into darkness. 

5:30-6:00pm: Jennifer Kendall - Tessellations - M.C. Escher-style (FREE)

Tessellations are shapes that cover a plane without leaving gaps or creating overlap.  They are found everywhere - from honeycombs to the artwork of MC. Escher.  Come and explore this fascinating mathematical concept and turn it into your very own piece of artwork to take home!   

6:30-7:30pm: Ice cream making with TC Scoops ($5)

Learn the less than fine art of making ice cream.  Try making your own from scratch vanilla coffee can ice cream.  After your creation is done, top with your favorite toppings for only $5!

7:00-7:30pm: Med Farm Fiber Dyeing (FREE)

Join Medway Community Farm’s Director of Education Alison Dempsey, for a demonstration about plant based dye and fiber dying techniques. Mother Nature’s pallet offers a variety of safe, effective and radiant colors to make all your dying projects fun and unique. Learn about what dye colors are hiding in your garden and backyard.

8:00-9:00pm: Tim Rice Photo - Travel Photography (FREE)

Tim Rice is a photographer based in Medway. Join him for a discussion on travel photography. Tim recently visited Cuba and Iceland and has traveled to many other locations around the country. Come and view a presentation of his work. Learn how he gets many of his shots, pick up tips and tricks on how to take your travel pictures to the next level and ask Tim questions about photos and travel. 12:00-2:00pm: Live Animation in Makerspace! (FREE)

CGI Character Animation demonstration. Character animation is a fascinating field for those with an interest in drawing, acting, and storytelling through film and video games. Come into the Makerspace and watch a live animation demonstration from senior video game animator and game animation teacher Seth Kendall.  Feel free to ask questions about the field or animation process as he works!
