An independent law firm's investigation of Mendon Selectman Mark Reil and Administrator Kim Newman has been completed and is in the hands of selectmen and Public Safety Director Ernie Horn. WMRC has learned the report is 13 pages in length and Horn is now reviewing its contents and will seek additional information from witnesses in an effort to verify specific details and decide if any disciplinary action is warranted. He is the sole judge and jury and will make the final determination about the next step. If Newman or Reil are dissatisfied with his ruling they may appeal to Worcester Superior Court.
The investigation was undertaken by a private law firm after allegations were made that Reil and Newman had been involved in a relationship by Firefighter Mark Zarella who said the rumors were rampant around town. Reil and Newman vehemently denied the accusations.
Chief Horn told WMRC he is continuing his part of the investigation. WMRC has requested a copy of that report. Horn said he is withholding the document for the time being under specific statutes of the open meeting law. Horn told WMRC because there are allegations of improper relationships, and salary increases, it is most appropriate to release the investigation report in its entirety as there is a significant interest in public disclosure. Horn said when appropriate he will release the document requested by WMRC without any redaction.
