Mr. Walter K. Kaplan Jr., 83, of Mendon MA died Tuesday (January 25, 2022) at the UMASS Medical Center University Campus in Worcester MA after an illness. He was the beloved husband of Irene N. (Glemboski) Kaplan.
Walter was born in Springfield MA, the son of the late Walter K. and the late Mary (Baron) Kaplan. He was a graduate of Suffield CT High School, Class of 1956, serving as class President.
Walter enlisted in the US Air Force in 1956 and had served in the Strategic Air Command, stationed at his Home Base in Puerto Rico. He was honorably discharged in 1962 as an A1C.
Walter was first employed at Pratt & Whitney Corporation, working in their Experimental Department. He later worked for thirty years at Tennessee Gas Pipeline, where he held positions as Operator, Assistant Supervisor, Employee Relations Manager and finally as Supervisor.
After his retirement from Tennessee Gas Pipeline in 1997 he worked as a consultant and later helped to create Delta Gulf of Worcester MA, a consulting company, where he served as Superintendent.
Walter enjoyed watching his sons play basketball, hockey, Quarter Midget racing & tractor pulling. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports & tractor pulling. He was very involved with the Old Coots Tractor Pulling Club and served as the club’s announcer.
Walter also enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife in their motorhome. They traveled to Colorado and Florida and also attended many Nascar races. Walter and Irene did everything together and clearly enjoyed being with each other.
Along with his beloved wife of sixty-two years, he is survived by his three sons: Robert Kaplan and his wife Elizabeth of Castle Rock CO, Craig Kaplan and his fiancée Amy Laporte of Suffield CT and Scott Kaplan and his wife Lauren of Suffield CT; his five grandchildren: Jeffrey, Jacob, Bridget, Lucas and Samantha; three nieces & one nephew and their families; also two sisters-in-law.
Walter was the brother of the late Dorothy McCarty; the late Larry Kaplan and the late Thomas Kaplan.
In accordance with his wishes cremation will take place. Relatives & friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM in St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish, 151 Mendon Street, Upton MA. Visiting hours will be held Friday evening (February 25th) from 5pm to 7pm at the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, 44 Congress Street, Milford MA.
Due to COVID-19 and the family’s concerns for the wellbeing of everyone the use of face masks will be required for all facets of the funeral services.
