101.3 MyFM Trivia Question

When was the last time Milford & franklin squared off to open a season?

Trivia Answer: B. 2012

EEE Threat

-Both teams had their Week 1-A games moved due to the EEE threat plaguing a good chunk of the Commonwealth. Franklin will travel to Andover next Saturday and Milford will host Attleboro next Saturday.

Milford Under The Microscope

-Milford starts their season on the road for the 3rdconsecutive season

-Milford hasn’t won a season opener since 2015 (also their last Week 1 road win)

-The team has started each of the last two seasons with an 0-2 mark. They look to change that in 2019.

-Head Coach Anthony Vizakis enters his 3rdyear in the position. His 3rdseason starts in the town he works in (Franklin), as he is a Computer Science teacher at Horace Mann Middle School.

-Robb McCoy takes over as Defensive Coordinator

-Colby Pires returns at QB. He threw for 22 TDs and 2300 yards in 2018.

-His 22 TDs last year were good for 2ndmost in the Hockomock League

-Pires & FB/LB CJ Cerrella were named Captains

-Cerrella is also a key force defensively

-RB Luke Rosa looks to be a force in the backfield (7 TD last year) and on defense. Hockomocksports.com speculates that he’ll have a big year on both sides of the ball.

-The Scarlet Hawks lost the majority of their receiving corp but look for Danny Farrell, Carter Scudo, Herrick Louis, Max Martin, Kevin O’Connor and Matt Varteresian to potentially haul in passes

-Look for Louis, O’Connor, Martin & Varteresian to play key roles on defense as well

-Offensive line will consist of Nick Yohn, Dom Schofield, Mario Lee and Dom Stallbaum, amongst others.

Figuring Out Franklin

-Coach Eian Bain returns for his 4thseason at the helm

-The team beat Brockton in the Division 1 South Playoffs last season before falling to powerhouse Xaverian.

-WR Jack Nally returns to the squad. He has been one of the best receiver in the state during his playing career. Nally tallied 922 total yards in 2018 and also had 350 return yards.

-Nally recently announced his commitment to Wesleyan University in Connecticut. He will play both baseball and football there. Wesleyan is also the alma mater of Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick.

-Defensively look for LB Evan Wertz to be the centerpiece. He had 122 tackles in 11 games last season (average of 11 per game) including 45 solo stops and 10 tackles for a loss. He also had 3 pass breakups to go along with an interception.

-Franklin’s starting QB will be Thomas Gasbarro, replacing 2019 Franklin HS Graduate Nick Gordon

-The Panthers are the #12 team in the pre-season ranking published by massvarsity.com

-Franklin is vying for their first Hockomock title since 2009

-The Panthers have never won the Kelley-Rex Division since it’s 2010 inception.

-Only 3 teams have never won a Hockomock League title: Attleboro, Milford and Taunton

Talking Turkey

-Thanksgiving may be a long way off, but Milford did announce over the summer that they will play Taunton on Thanksgiving in 2020 and beyond. The story was first reported on myFM by Steve Watson on the July 13th Sports Buzz show.

-Taunton is coached by longtime Franklin coach Brad Sidwell

-Meanwhile, Franklin has played King Phillip on Thanksgiving for decades and will continue to do so.
