SALMON at Medway, a senior living community combining independent living, assisted living, and memory care, is collaborating with Medway Police to bring Dementia Friends to the surrounding town.
A global movement, Dementia Friends was established with the goal of helping everyone in each community understand how dementia affects their community members, and how each of us can make a difference in the lives of those living with the disease.
“We all know someone affected by dementia. It’s important to educate everyone in the Medway community – emergency workers, bus drivers, and grocery store workers – so they know what to do if they come across someone with dementia while out in the community,” says Director of Business Development, Nancy Andrie. “Our goal is to get as many Medway Residents certified as we can in order to improve the lives of those community members who know someone, are caring for someone, or are someone living with dementia.”
To reach their goal, SALMON at Medway is working with Sergeant Jeffrey Watson of Medway Police, to get their police department police certified as a Massachusetts Dementia Friend. Once all Medway Police Officers are trained, they will bring the trainings to the Medway Fire Department and the Medway school systems.
“There are so many kids who either know or live with someone with dementia. It can be helpful to get them this training early,” says Andrie. She continues, “It’s fairly simple to earn a certificate as a Massachusetts Dementia Friend. All a person needs to do is attend the virtual program and review the program booklet to earn their certification.”
The virtual program will be presented by Andrie and SALMON’s own memory care program director, branded as SALMON’s Tapestry Program, Diane Tonelli OTR/L, MHA, CDP, CADDCT. To participate in this program, please contact Nancy Andrie at firstname.lastname@example.org or Diane Tonelli at email@example.com.
In addition to independent living cottages and apartments and traditional assisted living apartments, SALMON at Medway offers a 40-apartment, secure, state-of-the-art memory care unit at 44 Willow Pond Circle, Medway, MA 02053.
