Ten Questions With Tony Soul

Who is Tony Soul?

Tony Soul is an old man doing a young man thing.  The spirit of the music and our band mates over takes me.  I get a shot of adrenaline and we are off to the races.  Ironically, the TS act today is very similar to the one I was doing 1966 to 1969.  Quit 42 years and now back, hard, loving every minute of the new life local music has given us.

Tell me about the Tony Soul Project.

TSP got started when a local bass player quit his blues power trio and wanted to start a Motown band.  He and I are no longer together.  It was a short-lived venture of musical triumphs but disorganization led to its demise.  I was working with the RicoMoon band but not out performing and dabbling in a blues start up with Matt Sambito and Mike Kalenderian.  Bob Cramer called and said he had sold his business, was bored and wanted to play in a band.  Mike and Bob are good friends.  This developed into the Tony Soul Delta Blues Project, which was shortened to The Tony Soul Project in 2013.  We have been doing approximately 125 shows a year for the last 2 years now.  We play clubs in MA east of Springfield and selected clubs in New Hampshire.  We are a five-piece band; guitar, bass, drums, sax and me.  We can flex to 7 or 8 as needed.  We play soul music, rhythm and blues, straight blues and old-time rock & roll.

What can one expect for a Tony Soul Project show?

It is high energy, dance all night.  With the concentration being on volume control and overall band tightness, the patrons can hear and feel what we are bringing to them.  You will get your money’s worth!  Money back guarantee and free shipping!

4. When you are not listening to rhythm and blues, what are you listening to?

I am a jazz cat, grew up on it.  I understand it.  I do listen to a lot of blues, mostly one man Delta.  Fascinates me.

Do you remember the first song you sang professionally?

Oh yeah, it was “On Broadway” by the Drifters

You’re a staple at the Local Music Social (First Monday of the Month at The Tradesman in Milford).  What keeps you coming back?

It is a long list… the atmosphere, the steak, NEW FRIENDS, you, Rob.  Man, it’s fun.

Who would play Tony Soul in your life story?

People say Pacino

Besides music, what do you like to do with your free time?

Well, free time, I have found that running a local band that plays an average of 2 ½ times per week is almost a full time job.  I am still employed, semi-retired, and work Tuesday through Thursday as a sales representative.  I also ump in the spring and summer in the Framingham area.

What are your top 3 favorite songs?

Hard one… 1. Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag – James Brown  2.  I’m Willin’ – Lowell George  3.  Freedom Jazz Dance – Miroslav Vitous

When you hit the crossroads, which direction will you travel?

Easy… wherever that road takes me.
